Project 1A: Journey for the 5 Senses

Precedent Studies: Analyzing spatial poetics & spatial typologies in architecture

Two precedents of different typologies are chosen to understand its spatial qualities as well as their poetic elements. For linear form building, Church of Light is chosen whereas Hagia Sophia is chosen as centric form precedent.

Project 1B: Journey for the 5 Senses

Exploring Spatial Typologies and Poetics: Journey for the 5 Senses

This project requires us to adapt the knowledge we attained from Project 1A,included the spatial typologies and poetic elements , to design 2 different form of buildings to interpret the poem we chose.

The poem we chose is ‘Last Thoughts’ by Joseph A.Wraith.

For the linear form, the sequence of feelings of the whole process is shown: the dilemma faced by the man whether suicide or continue living; provide options and finally divert him to a positive way which is continue to live .

The building is located above a lake, surround with beautiful landscape. It is form by stacking of concrete cubes, and there’s a tunnel around the center part of the model.

In order to get the best view of the landscape, he must first escape the suicide path.

Whereas for the centric form, it is interpret in a way which take suicide as challenging the boundaries.

A white stark cube located inside forest, with a giant organic structure that forms a maze in it.

The users might experience layering of feelings while they walk through the whole journey. From determination for dead , face obstacles and gain hopes and positive thinking while challenging the obstacles and finally reach a state of peace in mind.

Project 2A: Genius Loci-
Site Analysis & Design Concept

Pulau Jerejak is an abandoned island sandwiched between Butterworth and Penang Island. Apparently there’s only a hotel on that island and it ispromoting eco-tourism.

Back then, It has been a quarantine center for leprosy and tuberculosis patients. There were also British detention camp for racial riots and Rehabilitation center for drug addicts and criminals.

However, the residents left around 20 years ago , the island was left abandoned till now, with historical traces and growing forest.

Project 2B Genius Loci- Site Analysis & Design Concept

SITE RESPONSE AND DESIGN CONCEPT

Through Project 2A, a better understanding of the site has been gained.

Prior to the design stage, sketches are done base on the feelings and perceptions gained throughout the journey.

For an island which has been exploited by people and abandoned, the nature is reviving rapidly and strongly.

The remaining man-made structure and the forests had formed a strong contrast and it present a unique character of the site. But everything seems merging flawlessly together , in a balance state ; in my opinion that was ‘Time’ that connecting all the elements together.

Therefore, the concept is passing of time and the ambiguous atmosphere of the site.

The initial building was designed to stands out from the context by using modern materials such as concrete and glass to emphasize the balance harmony between man made materials and the nature.

The building has an hour-glass shaped floor plan. It is a semi-enclosed space that framed the trees in it and has a looking deck right above the existing building to provide users different experiences when they came to nature environment and the existing building.

The concept and the orientation of the building have been carry forward to the final design. Some of the building features such as semi enclosed , scenic looking deck also retained for the next project.

Project 3: Genius Loci- Visitor Intrepretive Centre (VIC)

Project 3 is to design a 450sqm visitor interpretative center for Pulau Jerejak, a historical island, which has been used as quarantine and prison purpose.

The 450 sqm space included : Reception, Exhibition area, Public gathering space, Souvenir shop, and private spaces like such as office suites, toilet etc.

Inspired by Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the shore,

the concept of the building is “Passing of time” and the ambiguity of time. The setting of the site, which is British prison, time seems stop at the ruins, where the surrounding greeneries are growing strong. This make a contrast and gives a feeling of ambiguous about whether time is flowing or stagnant at that particular space.
