ARC2423: Building Services

Project 1: Application of Building Services

The objectives of the project is to develop students’ understanding the building services system’s design and construction. Design studio 2’s final project, a retreat house is used as case study to let us apply building services system on it. The building services systems include: electrical supply system, cold water and hot water supply system, sewerage and sanitary system and drainage system. The complete installations of building services system has been proposed through schematic diagrams and plans drawings.

Project 2: Case Study, Analysis and Documentation of Building Services Systems

The selected building is  Menara OBYU (also known as Point 92) which located in Damansara. As Point 92 is a green building with many sustainable features, it is also a very good example of achieving high energy efficiency.

Through our site visits, various building service system have been introduced, such as : Mechanical ventilation and air conditioning system, electrical supply system, cold water supply system, sewerage and sanitary system, mechanical transportation system and fire protection system.

Project 1: Alternative Construction Solutions

This is a group project whereby students will employ and demonstrate the knowledge which they have gained in Building Materials, Building Construction 1 and 2 as well as Building Structures. In this project each group is required to choose one of the group members’ previous semester’s design projects. Then each group needs to propose the alternative, more recent and complex construction systems that suit the local context, facilitated by appropriate precedent studies. Finally, a complete documentation including a report and a set of working drawings of the modified design shall be produced.

OBJECTIVE

1.To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of construction technology in the existing building.

2. To encourage students to explore alternative construction systems

3. To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

4. To develop the students’ skills in producing working drawings.

Project 2: Advanced Roof and Industrialized Building System

This project which consists of group and individual assessment components, predominantly relates to the topics of advanced roof construction, Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the embodied energy calculation. Prior to work on this project, students will be exposed with different types of advanced roof construction, IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom. This project consists of two parts. The first part is a group component where each group is required to conduct a case study of a building which was constructed using an advanced roof construction and IBS system, to understand the systems better. The second part is an individual component where each student has to apply the construction systems that have been studied to their own building design.

Project 1:Building Plans/Fire-Fighting Plan

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1.To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set floor plans, sections and elevations
2.To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application 3.To develop an awarenessof the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation, including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL)and local fire regulations
4.To develop an awareness of construction requirement consistent with design and performance

Project 2: Working Drawing: Construction/Technical Drawing

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

1.To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set

floor plans, wall sections and detailing of the students’ final design projects

2.To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application

3.To develop an awareness of the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation, including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) and local fire regulations

4.To develop an awareness of construction details consistent with design and performance.
